MEAT RECALL
On February 6, 2008, TASD was notified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education
regarding the "hold" on beef from Westland/Hallmark Meats.
This is a meat slaughterhouse where product was produced, purchased
by the USDA commodity program, and shipped to processors for commodity
diversion into various beef products.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that these
meat products are now being recalled, which means that if TASD had any
of these products they should not be used. This is considered a Class
II recall: A health hazard situation where there is a remote probability
of adverse health consequences from the use of this product.
TASD received notice early last week of specific product codes and
our staff examined the meat in our freezers. TASD did not have any of
the products that were identified at that time. The USDA recall was
expanded on February 17, 2008. Further inspection by staff revealed
that TASD does not currently have any products on the recall.
Please be assured that at Tunkhannock Area that we continually purchase
food from secure sources to safeguard our food supply. The student's
health and safety is at the forefront of our daily routine as we prepare
healthy, nutritious meals for our most important stakeholders.
Nestled by the Susquehanna River, in Northeastern Pennsylvania's Wyoming
County, is the highly respected, progressive Tunkhannock Area School
District. Living proof that bigger is better, Tunkhannock Area is
the largest district in Susquehanna, Bradford, Wayne, Sullivan, and
Wyoming Counties and has the most to offer academically, athletically,
and culturally.
The physical facilities, featuring a modern high school building, a new
middle school complex, and four student-oriented elementary buildings,
are second to none in Pennsylvania. Approximately 1,100 students are enrolled
with the high school housing grades 9 through 12 and the middle school
housing grades 5 through 8. The district has opened a new middle school
that holds the state of the art in technology. The four elementary centers,
serving grades K through 4 are located in Evans Falls, Mill City, Mehoopany,
and Tunkhannock. These four elementary buildings are relatively new, with
the oldest one dating to 1972.
With modern computer equipment at all levels, a computer literacy program
is available to all middle school students and an expanded computer curriculum
is offered in the high school. Both middle school and high school offer
an extensive technology prep program. In addition, computer hardware and
software is integrated into all course offerings in every grade. Computer
courses are also taught during the summer months for both students and
adults as part of a community program.

miles, is approximately 32,000 and encompasses thirteen municipalities.
