School Lunch Application

Compass Online Lunch Application

The new Mehoopany Elementary School opened its doors and welcomed its first students in the fall of 1996. On April 15, 2002 the school was tragically struck by a fire that destroyed the main lobby/office area, all of the third and fourth grade classrooms, remedial reading room, learning support room, library and the all purpose area.

At Mehoopany Elementary School, students are provided numerous opportunities in a variety of settings to experience academic, social, emotional, and physical growth. Developmentally appropriate opportunities begin for kindergarten students so that readiness is provided for the academic subjects of reading, math and writing. Subjects are reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, English, and handwriting. Specialists teach art, music, physical education, library and technology education.

Students are introduced to reading using a variety of methods. Phonics and whole word instruction are provided through good, quality literature that is supported by a basal program. The use of reading material beyond the basal program is emphasized throughout grades one through four. The students are involved with the Accelerated Reading Program that encourages independent reading. Writing in sentence and/or paragraph form is utilized daily. Our students are also exposed to Kid Writing, Guided Reading, and Rocket Math.

Math instruction is also characterized by use of meaningful repetition and the use of manipulatives to build student knowledge of math concepts.

The Title I Reading Program helps to identify and support children that may be experiencing reading difficulties at an early age. We have hired additional staff to meet the needs of all of our student body.

An active PTA meets regularly. This group provides funds for special programs and field trips. Meetings are held each month either in the afternoon or early evening.

Other opportunities for additional instruction are available to the students, Grades K-4:
. Peer Tutoring
. Cross-Grade Tutoring
. College Student Volunteers (Student Teachers)

. Compass Learning
. WEB
. Retired Citizen Volunteers
. Big Brothers/Big Sisters
