TUNKHANNOCK AREA HIGH SCHOOL
Tunkhannock Area High School (TAHS) is a progressive public high school
offering students a core curriculum based on the Pennsylvania Academic
Standards and a blend of knowledge and skills designed to prepare students
for successful post graduation experiences. TAHS offers an academic
curriculum designed to meet the proficiency standards of the Pennsylvania
System of School Assessment (PSSA), to improve students' readiness for
the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), and to ready students for traditional
two year and four year technical and college/university settings. Tunkhannock
Area is also one of 22 comprehensive high schools in the Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania. Comprehensive high schools offer a complete academic
curriculum along with a series of state approved career and technical
education (CTE) programs all within the same building. The technical
programs at TAHS are designed to meet the needs of the 21st Century
skilled workforce, and students have an opportunity to take both academic
and technical coursework during their high school years. Several programs
at TAHS are approved for a state sponsored program known as Tech Prep.
These programs prepare students for highly skilled technical degrees
and occupations by combining secondary and post secondary coursework
in an established sequence. Tunkhannock Area also runs a very successful
cooperative education program allowing students to earn credit as they
gain employment skills through on-the-job work experiences. In addition
to the core academic and technical course offerings at TAHS, a full
compliment of elective courses is available, as well as opportunities
for honors and advanced placement level coursework.
INSTRUCTION
Instructional expectations at Tunkhannock Area are designed to address
students' individual learning styles and provide opportunities for students
to learn in a variety of settings, experiences, and activities. Teachers
are to plan and deliver lessons that promote understanding of content
knowledge and skills, and the application and relevancy of this information
in the modern world. Students are offered an abundance of experiential
learning opportunities through labs, field trips, and special presentations
and guests. Many courses at TAHS are taught according to the co-teaching
model. Co-teaching allows two teachers to simultaneously deliver a lesson
in order to more effectively impact multiple learning styles. Tutoring
opportunities are available at Tunkhannock Area through consultation
with individual teachers and through organized programs such as the
EAP Math Program and Study Island. Tunkhannock Area High School also
strives to support classroom instruction by procuring the most current
textbooks, software, and supplemental materials necessary for effective
instruction. The schedule at TAHS includes both block (80 minute) and
traditional (40 minute) class periods. The various academic and technical
departments of the high school have developed courses to reflect the
class length that best suites each discipline's specific needs. Students
who encounter academic challenges are encouraged to consult with their
teachers initially, but may also find assistance through the guidance
and administrative offices.
ACTIVITIES
Tunkhannock Area includes a wide range of extra and co-curricular activities
that offer opportunities for students to learn in different dimensions

have opportunities to pursue interests in school leadership, community
service, business, and a series of hobbies and non traditional student
interests. Tunkhannock is particularly proud of its robotics team, where
the Team 222 Tigertrons have won national recognition as one of the
leaders in interscholastic robotics competition. A list of all Tunkhannock
